Kathie George is an internationally known award winning artist and teacher. She is best known for her unique Batik technique and other watermedia paintings. She is full of spunk and energy. Kathie is a wonderful teacher, one of the best I've ever taken from. We are very blessed to have her coming to Greencastle, you don't want to miss this opportunity.
WAX AND WATERCOLOR - AN INTERESTING MIX!
Put the two on textured rice paper and presto! Fun guaranteed to energize your paintings. Kathie will lead you step by step thru the layering process, till you begin to wonder just how thick this wax can get. Then you'll remove the wax - it's like Christmas! We get a bit messy, but we have fun doing it.
Great watercolor skills are not needed for this technique. What builds a great batik is SHAPE and VALUE.
DAY 1: Students will be familiarized with the technique thru step by step instructions on a project chosen by the instructor. This is the easiest way to ‘wrap’ your mind around the process of layering wax and color. You’ll be an expert by the end of the day!
DAY 2: Students will be encouraged to try subject matter of their own choosing. However, they may continue in a step by step manner, if they choose, or use one of Kathie's instruction packets, which are also step-by-step.
Importance will be placed on the creative thought process and development of the subject matter for a batik, as well as using color and value to your advantage. Any subject can be done with batik, but we'll look for projects that will be easy 'starts' for those just beginning with this process.
Textured Mediums for Fabulous Effects
DAY 3: Join those of us who know how fun it is to slosh around in textured mediums! This workshop begins by experimenting with Golden mediums on watercolor paper to create a wonderful ground for our painting. We'll pour and carve and stamp and scrape, till we get a simply scrumptious surface. Then, when it looks so great we can barely stand it, we'll paint on it with Golden fluid acrylics. With acrylic there are really no mistakes, just a lot of fun as you discover that this is indeed the most forgiving, adaptable medium. Use my design or draw your own. You'll leave this class with a completed painting and the skills and confidence to go with it.
If you don't have watercolors Kathy will provide a palette for $4.50 per day. She will also be selling the Awagami Ginwashi rice paper for $3.50 per sheet. Minimal painting experience is needed for this workshop. Contact Susan regarding lodging or any other questions Susan@JoyfulArtStudio.com (717)658-2177.
